Peat Ecosystem Recovery in the Community Area

 

PEATLAND RESTORATION IN COMMUNITY AREA 2015-2019

Communities have important role on protection and management of peatland ecosystem in Indonesia, since communities have physical, social, cultural, and economical relation. Referring to the Ministry Environment and Forestry Number 129 Year 2017 regarding National Peat Hydrological Unit Map Scale 1:250.000, more than 75 percent of conservation and cultivated function of Indonesia Peatland are utilized by communities and other open-area activities. This area usually used to support economic, social, and cultural needs of communities and indigenous communities. Enhance communities understanding, willingness, and having proper capacity to actively participate in peatland protection and management is also key factor in reducing peatland fire in community area.

The Directorate Peatland Degradation Control, MoEF, has developed community-based peatland conservation and restoration (DESA MANDIRI PEDULI GAMBUT) program to encourage communities’ involvement. This program established in collaboration with local government, universities, and private sectors. The goal of this program is restoring peatland ecosystem in community area integrated with improving community awareness to actively involved in protection and management of peat ecosystems in their area. The principle concept of this program is Bring Back the Water, Bring Back the Vegetation and Improve the Community Livelihood. In the period of 2015 to 2019, 9,950 hectares communities’ peatland area in 53 villages of 24 districts in 7 provinces are restored under this program. This program involved 7 universities and 121 local facilitators, detail information is provided in below Table.
